Life cycle management of M62 type diesel locomotives during operation at the Kovel locomotive depot

Abstract: One of the main tasks for reducing operating costs for diesel locomotives is to maintain them in good condition with specified reliability indicators. This can be achieved through both rational use and high-quality repair of rolling stock. At the moment, a difficult situation has developed with diesel locomotives of the M62 series on the railways of Ukraine. These locomotives were developed back in the 60s of the last century, and most of them have reached their service life. On the other hand, they are no longer produced by the manufacturer and in this situation it is impossible to resume their production. Also negative in this matter is that the 14D40 diesel engines have already been discontinued, so replacing them with new ones is not possible. The release of spare parts for this diesel is also not an easy matter. On the other hand, these diesel locomotives have a strong frame and can still be operated. At the same time, extending the life cycle of these locomotives through remotorization or comprehensive modernization is of great interest. Therefore, the extension of their life cycle and the efficiency of the work of JSC "Ukrzaliznytsia" largely depend on the correct choice of the modernization project for mainline diesel locomotives, and the chosen topic is relevant at present. The object of the study is the technical operation of mainline diesel locomotives of the M62 type. The subject of the study is methods and approaches to assessing the life cycle of rolling stock. The purpose of the study is to extend the life cycle of diesel locomotives of the M62 type and reduce its operating costs. According to the results of the qualification work, the following research tasks were completed: – an analysis of the operation of mainline diesel locomotives of the M62 type and methods of influencing their life cycle was carried out; – an assessment of the technical level of modernized diesel locomotives of the M62 type was made; – the life cycle cost of modernization of diesel locomotives was calculated. It was established that all diesel locomotives of the M62 type require modernization to extend their life cycle. A number of projects for their modernization have been developed in Ukraine and in other countries. It is proposed to first calculate the technical level of the modernized M62 diesel locomotive to determine the modernization project. For this purpose, the methodology for assessing the technical level of diesel locomotives was improved in terms of adapting it to use for M62 diesel locomotives. It takes into account the features of the mainline operation of this diesel locomotive. The life cycle cost of the modernized M62M diesel locomotive was also calculated according to the Polish project "Rail Polska".
